Who are we and what do we do?

LUU Backstage Society was founded on 12th October 1995 and quickly established itself in the Riley Smith Hall and Raven Theatre in Leeds University Union. We are a group for anyone who shares a common interest in the off-stage activities within the theatre.

The society is mainly made up of students, who provide technical theatre and live events services to Leeds University Union performance societies. We work on 10-15 productions a year, normally based in our beloved Riley, just off the LUU Foyer in the centre of campus. Every now and again you’ll also find us venturing around Leeds, working and helping out in different venues.

We work with some of the best equipment in the industry and all our members have a huge range of different interests in the artistic, design and technical disciplines that go into putting on a successful show;

Production Management

Set Design and Construction

Lighting Design and Operation

Sound Design and Engineering

Stage Management

Stage Crewing

Front of House

Rigging and Installation.

We pride ourselves in being a learning society

All members of the society are volunteers and provide their time and expertise completely for free, most of whom join us with no prior experience, so we were honoured to be named LUU Best Society 2013-14 and LUU Best Performance Society 2015-16 at the LUU Riley Awards!

We come from a wide variety of degree programmes and years of study, and we welcome members from the wider Leeds student community, alongside University of Leeds students!
